Feeling hot, hot, hot

New Year resolutions are tough. We all choose to start them straight after the festivities – going from drinking and eating to excess to hard exercise and diet programs. This makes us so likely to quit them before the month is out. According to a recent survey most people have given up their resolutions by the 17th January.

So why not take another look at those resolutions you made a month ago and set yourself some more achievable healthy living goals, now we are heading into February? To get you started I’m going to suggest a really easy thing to be adding to your lists – HOT YOGA.

On a freezing cold Saturday morning a few weeks ago I headed on over to Westminster Lodge in St Albans to try Hot Yoga for the first time ever. It’s always been on my must try list, but I kept chickening out, worried about being able to cope with the heat (and the yoga moves). Westminster Lodge has recently opened its own Hot Yoga Studio, specially made to create the perfect environment for the activity.

HotYoga

(I stupidly forgot to take any lovely pictures myself, as I was too excited! If you want to see some great ones, visit Miss Wheezy’s blog, as she’s got some great ones)

They have a selection of classes which vary in warmth from Hot to Warm, with something for everyone. I headed to a Intro class which was made up of 10 people, who like me, were completely new to Hot Yoga, which definitely made it less scary. Surprisingly I wasn’t the worst one in the room – but even if you are, they let you go at your own pace and recommend that you don’t compare yourself to others (although that’s always hard to do).

We went through a series of moves which not only helped stretch us out, but which also got us sweating in the heat. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The time flew by and the heat wasn’t too much at all.

It really is the perfect, easy addition to your workout schedule and is a great way to warm up on a cold winter’s day. I can’t imagine a better way to whisk yourself off to an exotic location (mentally) while working out!

Here are just a few reasons why you should try Hot Yoga:

  • FLEXIBILITY Heat allows you to reach new levels of flexibility
  • STRENGTH Low impact and uses muscles you didn’t know you had
  • BREATHE Learn to breathe in a full and controlled manner
  • CARDIO A 90-minute class can burn up to 1,000 calories
  • HEALING The primary purpose of this yoga is therapy
  • DETOXIFYING Sweating throughout yoga detoxifies skin

What I’m loving this month

I know I’ve been MIA for the past month or so…but things are back on track now and life has settled back to normality, so here’s my round up of my favourite things this month.

1.Homedics Foldaway Footspa (RRP £49.99)

20161021_114313

This is an absolutely genius idea. Finally, a footspa which can collapse and fold flat for easy storage! Not only that but it’s a great quality item. Give family and friends the gift of relaxation this Christmas with their own easy to use spa from Homedics.

The footspa features soothing vibration massage and can be used with bath salts to provide a soothing experience for tired feet. Raised acunodes provide extra stimulation for tired feet and the fab keep warm technology ensures a comfortable water temperature throughout your experience. A great present for anyone (or yourself)

2. Ahmad Dessert Teas (£4 each)

20161124_221323

On a diet or just trying to cut back on sweet things? Then this new range of Dessert teas from Ahmad Tea are a must-buy. Indulge in dessert guilt-free thanks to these delicious flavours. Available in six different flavours reflecting some dessert favourites: Strawberry Velvet Cake, Pear & Cinnamon Strudel, Moroccan Orange Slice, Citrus & Mint Sorbet, Strawberry Basil Coulis and Mango & Lychee Souffle. Available from Ocado or follow the web link above to purchase.

3. Charles Viancin Camellia Tea Magnet & Infuser

20161126_140043

This little gadget makes enjoying tea leaves great fun. Simply fill the metal infuser with your chosen tea, drop into your mug and leave to soak. When it’s time to remove, use the flower (which is magnetised) to retrieve the infuser and place on the green leaf. A cute little addition to any kitchen and a great stocking filler.

4. Vileda Easy Wring & Clean Turbo (£34.99)

20161021_114255

I know, I know…it’s a mop. But this isn’t just any old mop, this is the Easy Wring & Clean Turbo from Vileda. The pedal powered wringer rotates 500-1000 times a minute to wring out excess water, with virtually no effort – a real life saver when you have a dog in the house like us. Apparently this means it gives 20% better particle pick up. All I can say is our floors look spotless and we’ve been using it for months now. There’s also the mop holder and easy pour function to help get rid of the dirty water with little effort. The mop head is machine washable too – simply pop it in the washing machine when it gets dirty and it will keep going.

5. Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion Weightless Texture Spray

Shea Moisture fruit fusion texture spray.jpg

This styling spray feels as though it has been designed for me – it works perfectly with my crazy, fine hair. The spray delivers a balance of body and definition for an effortless lasting tousled look. With beautifully fruity ingredients including Shea Butter, Coconut Water, Dragon Fruit, Lychee Berry and Green Apple Extracts. The spray also includes Imbe Oil which helps to block humidity and Aloe to add a weightless shine. This really makes my hair manageable and is a great everyday styling spray.

All of the above were sent to me to review, but opinions are all my own.

Crystal Clear with Brita

Brita has launched their new pastel Marella jugs range available in a variety of gorgeous pastel colours. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your current filter or don’t have one yet, then now’s your opportunity as you can pick up a jug in pastel pink – yes, pastel pink!

brita_marella-cool-pastel-pink_8655944_3

The jug holds 2.4litres and fits perfectly into the fridge door. As with all Brita filters it reduces levels of chlorine, heavy metals and limescale in your water to produce cool, clear, crisp water. We use ours all the time, keeping it nice and cold in the fridge for easy access.

The team at Brita have also come up with some delicious recipes using Brita filter water to try at home. The purple smoothie is definitely the winner for me, but why not try them all.

Jane Plan – the second week

To everyone out there wondering how my second week on Jane Plan went, it went incredibly well. In total I lost 3lbs over the week. Not as good as the first week, but not bad at all. You often lose more in the first week when starting a diet, so it was no surprise that I didn’t quite reach the same figure in the second week.

The second week featured more delicious meals packed with flavour and freshness. Here’s just a couple of examples. For more information on options, have a look at my last post.

img_0487 img_0491 img_0492

I would definitely do Jane Plan again. It’s a great diet which could work long term or just for a couple of weeks to get into a party dress. A great plan to do in the run up to Christmas.

Jane Plan

September is one of those times of the year for a fresh start. As the seasons change, kids go back to school and the days get shorter, it’s a great time to focus on losing some weight in time for all the Christmas parties.

Which is why I’ve been trying out the fabulous Jane Plan.  I don’t know if you’ve seen the ads on TV or read about Jane Plan, but it’s a great diet that focuses on real food.

The beauty of Jane Plan is that everything is sent to you (without any postage charges) from options you select off the website. So easy.

I was sent a selection of breakfasts, lunches, snacks and dinners along with a guide to the diet and some sheets to log my food for the weeks I was doing the plan.

When the food arrived it looked great. Gorgeous packaging and as per my direction, no soups at all (I’ve done so many soup diets, I really can’t face soup anymore!)

20160728_203303

Breakfast options include granolas, branberry, mueslis and porridge oats. All you have to do is add your own milk or yoghurt for the perfect breakfast.

20160728_203314

The lunches I were sent included salads such as Salmon Salad, Couscous Salad, Tuna Salad. There were also hot options available such as a couple of hot pots and of course, a huge selection of soups.

20160728_203317

There was a huge variety of dinners including a beautiful Lasagne, a lentil cottage pie topped with mash, an Aloo Saag and absolutely tons of other options.

Snacks include biscuits, almonds and of course, chocolate bars.

The beauty of Jane Plan is that this is real correctly portioned food. Served with a side salad, the dishes are filling and satisfy that need for comfort food that often causes problems when dieting. It’s real food without any artificial flavourings, colours or preservatives. They aim to provide you with 1,200 calories a day, no starvation, just good food.

Was I hungry? Not at all – you have plenty of food and can even have an afternoon biscuit with your tea. It’s the closest thing to real life eating you’ll get on a diet!

I would absolutely recommend this plan to anyone with weight to lose who just wants an easy life. They’ve done all the counting, all the preparing and even deliver it to your door, making weight loss a doddle.

Definitely order the lasagne – it’s amazing.

At the end of the first week I’ve lost a total of 6lbs. A great start and it was so easy to stick to. Pop by the blog next Tuesday for my second week update.

Visit www.janeplan.com to find out more about the plan and order your personalised plan today.

Walk a mile in my shoes…

Over the last few years I’ve gone through various different trainers, from Nike to Adidas and Asics to Reebok, I’ve tried them all. I do gym classes such as Insanity and BodyAttack as well as hitting the gym and going for long walks with my dog.

All of these activities seem to require a different trainer, and none of them have been quite right.

Sketchers

So I was excited to discover the Skechers Flex Appeal Next Generation Memory Foam Trainers. These are literally the best trainers I’ve ever had. So incredibly comfy as lined with a memory foam, brightly coloured to add some pop to your workout wear these are great for a variety of exercises or just throwing on with a pair of jeans one day. Absolutely the comfiest yet best looking trainers around!

Here’s a lovely pic of me in my Skechers

If you are looking for a beautiful pair of trainers, why not visit Brantano? They’ve got a huge selection of trainers and even better…there’s a sale on at the moment. So it’s definitely time to treat yourself.

Lying on a bed of nails…

This is something I’ve been excited to tell you about for a while. I’m completely converted to the idea of lying on a bed of nails everyday!

I’ve been trying this one out for a couple of months to really test it out. Essentially a bed of nails, the Pranamat Eco is a beautiful mat covered with little lotus flowers which activate the body into boosting its natural defences, metabolism, blood circulation and stimulates the lymph nodes. Based on traditional massage principles it’s designed to help you relax and take away any pains which you might suffer from.

PranamatEcoproduct-pe-tt-vars

Now, I know lying on a bed of nails isn’t necessarily the most appealing of activities – but trust me on this – you build up gradually over a course of days and weeks until you can spend longer and longer on the mat. I’ve always suffered from migraines, unfortunately, but since I’ve been using this for just 15 minutes a day, I’ve had only one (which is really unusual for me), so there’s definitely something in it.

I’ll keep using it and promise to update you on how it’s going. The mats also look beautiful and are available in either turquoise, orange or lavender. (Mats start at £90 and pillows from £60)

Five ways to stay healthy this winter

5 Ways to Stay Healthy This Winter

Louise Westra, Resident Naturopath at ESPA Life at The Gleneagles Hotel, shares her top tips for winter health

As the evenings draw in and we start to feel the chill of autumn, it can be tempting to want to hibernate and forget our healthy habits. With winter being one of the key times of the year that people fall ill, Louise Westra, resident Naturopath at ESPA Life at The Gleneagles Hotel, has compiled her top five tips to help you stay healthy this winter.

1.       Wake Up Call

Start each morning with a cup of hot water and lemon. Not only will it warm you up on cold days, it provides a gentle ‘wake-up’ call to the digestive tract and liver. Lemons are a great natural antiseptic and can make a big difference to your digestive health.

2.      Double the Odds

Although we’re advised to aim for five portions of fruit and veg a day, I recommend aiming for 10. Up your intake by snacking on vegetables, or mix cooked and raw ingredients in a rainbow salad with an avocado dressing. Packing in phytonutrients can greatly reduce your risk of disease and offers a plethora of other health benefits.

3.      Moderation is Key

I see lots of clients adopting a ‘famine or feast’ approach to their diet, which really isn’t conducive to good health. While I’m not suggesting we shouldn’t watch what we eat, I do my best to stay away from the whole idea of ‘good’ & ‘bad’ foods. Obviously fruit and veg should be the foundation of your diet, but if you want a treat once in a while, then make it from natural ingredients, don’t opt for a pre-packaged, pro-inflammatory cocktail of ingredients.

4.      Wrap up Tight

Don’t underestimate the importance of wrapping up warmly with hats, scarves and gloves – and don’t overlook the good old-fashioned vest under clothing. Simply keeping warm can reduce the risk of colds, flu and more serious conditions.

5.      Fight a Cold the natural way

In the event of a cold or cough, sometimes it’s possible to fight it with nature – not medicine. It’s easy to take an over-the-counter remedy to try and battle your symptoms but you’re best to not supress mucus. Try my ‘Kick-a-germ’ soup (Recipe below) to ease symptoms and get you back on the road to recovery.

Louise Westra’s ‘Kick-a-Germ’ soup recipe

Use a base of approximately 1 litre of chicken stock (real is preferable) and add the following:-

·         3 cloves garlic

·         1 medium strength chilli

·         1 tablespoon fenugreek seeds

·         1 medium sized onion

·         1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger

·         Any seasonal vegetables chopped to the size you like

·         Cook until all the vegetables soft and tender

·         Add fresh lemon or lime juice to serve

Be prepared to spend the night sweating!
